The drive down to Skagway is breathtaking!! Definitely one of the most amazing roads I have driven so far, and I suspect it won't be the last. Without Carole pushing us onwards, I probably would have taken 2 days to do the 200 kms, as I'd be stopping at every roadside pullout to take photos.
We've spent the past few days here in Skagway. It is the consumate tourist town, but I have to admit I quite enjoyed hanging out today for Independence Day. They did the fireworks yesterday, presumably so people could sleep in today. Even though it is a small town, the fireworks were impressive, and actually lasted longer than the parade this morning. One highlight for me was seeing Dachsunds (aka "Wiener Dogs") dressed up in hot dog buns (truly, making them "chien chaud"). The other was seeing on of the old steam trains, number 73, still in operation.
With 5 ships in port, the town exploded with people, which made it easy to imagine how boisterous this place would have been during the gold rush.
Today, after a casual afternoon, we frantically packed in preparation of hiking the Chilkoot trail, which we start tomorrow. We'll post updates of what that was like upon our return.

Fabulous picture! Lucky Teddy's not there or he'd be munching on their buns!
